Beating cancer remains one of the major challenges in bio-medical research. Novel stem cell and cancer stem cell findings suggest new opportunities for treatment
of the tumor initiating cells as well as repair and regeneration of the affected tissue, such as salivary glands. NIRM aims to:
- Establish culture conditions for human intestinal epithelium growth for transplantation.
- Obtain a comprehensive genetic/epigenetic profile and lineage tracing of normal and cancer stem cells to safeguard normal regenerative stem cells following anticancer treatment.
- To improve salivary gland function by stem cell transplantation following cancer radiotherapy.
- To preserve the function of endothelial and epithelial cells by inhibiting trans-differentiation into fibroblasts.
- To understand the molecular pathways leading to fibrosis and to decipher the mechanisms behind the foreign body reaction.
