4th International Symposium "Stem Cells, Development and Regulations"
Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, Amsterdam
October 12-14, 2010

Words of Welcome

NIRM (The Netherlands Institute for Regenerative Medicine) is an interactive consortium of Dutch scientists in the field of stem cell research and regenerative medicine. NIRM research is focussed on the biology and the molecular programming of pluripotent and adult stem cells in normal health and disease. This fundamental research program on stem cells is bridged with other NIRM research that focuses on tissue engineering and regeneration so as to provide the synergism between disciplines necessary for the advancement of regenerative medicine.
Initiated by the NIRM stem cell researchers, the 4th Annual Conference on "Stem cells, Development and Regulation" is pleased to team-up with the ISSCR for this year's meeting. Together NIRM and the ISSCR aim to stimulate Dutch and European science in this important, exciting and fast-moving field of research. The conference program is designed to broaden our horizons by bringing international stem cell experts to the Netherlands, to highlight the most current discoveries in this field, and to promote scientific interaction and exchange of information between researchers at all stages of their career and across many scientific disciplines.
Elaine DzierzakProf. Elaine Dzierzak, Scientific Director NIRM

Fundamental research on human pluripotent stem cells and tissue-specific stem cells has created hope that we may use these cells to reconstruct whole tissues in order to restore function after disease or injury. Furthermore, research within NIRM addresses molecular mechanisms of diseases, and sophisticated culture models are developed to screen drugs. We believe that basic research will stimulate the development of novel therapies in regenerative medicine. NIRM is a cohesive initiative that stimulates interdisciplinary collaborations and is a hub for a wide variety of research themes within stem cell biology and cellular therapeutic approaches that benefit mankind.
Ruud BankProf. Ruud A. Bank, Scientific Director NIRM

The International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) is a global transdisciplinary science-based organization which promotes and fosters the exchange and dissemination of information and ideas relating to stem cells. Founded in 2002, the ISSCR membership has now grown to nearly 3,400 stem cell professionals from public, private, academic and government settings. This is ISSCR's first jointly-sponsored regional meeting in Europe, and we hope its success will build participation in ISSCR activities from Dutch and other European scientists. The ISSCR enthusiastically looks forward to working with NIRM to present an exceptional scientific program in the Netherlands and to encouraging new collaborations and friendships internationally.
